I Feel Like Taking On A Challenge

June 23, 2010

It was back to work for me this week. Going back was hard, not because I don’t like my job (I do like it), but because I had been off for a little over two weeks – one of which was spent in Yosemite. Rough.

As I’ve written before, a big reason for starting this blog was to chronicle how a non-camping girly-girl could get into outdoor activities. Up until now, I’ve focused on “nice” camping: setting up a campsite with many of the comforts of home, being near suitable bathroom facilities (flush toilets, showers), not doing a lot of “work.” Well, I might be very close to delving a little deeper into this camping thing…

Could that be ME someday?

As I posted last week, Yosemite did something to me. I wasn’t completely aware of how big an impact the trip had until going back to the “real world.” Two aspects of the trip have been front and center in my mind all week: our adventure hike and our drive to the high country.

Half Dome

I am now bound and determined to try a backpacking trip. I know, I know…that sounds a little extreme for my delicate nature. But it’s a challenge I want to take on and an experience I want to have. I’ve already looked into the process of applying for Yosemite’s High Sierra Camps. If that doesn’t work out, there are options through the Yosemite Mountaineering School and REI.

Becoming more of an outdoors-woman is my challenge to myself. I have several friends who challenge themselves by running marathons or participating in triathlons (I happen to know an Iron Man and an Iron Woman). Those kinds of challenges…not my thing. Hiking, camping, and maybe a little more – that is my marathon, my Iron Man. I don’t know why this is what I’ve chosen. All I know is that I’m enjoying it so far.
