It’s been a hot and humid summer here in Wisconsin. It was particularly humid yesterday, so what better to do than to start running again after not running for about a year
.
I have been struggling to remain active since we returned from Yosemite. Leading up to the trip, Jason and I were walking several evenings a week and taking nice long hikes every Sunday. We wanted to be able to handle the hiking we would surely be doing in Yosemite.
The hiking in Yosemite was way more intense than anything we could do near our little home in WI. While we fared better than we would have if we hadn’t been “training,” we didn’t feel as fit as we would have liked to.

Smiling on the outside, ready to pass out on the inside.
However, we came home and no longer had a looming goal to prepare for. While I’ve been working out a few times a week at home, Jason and I had pretty much scrapped any additional cardio we had been doing.
I finally decided to change that!
Jason and I are now training to run a 5K in September. It’s been years since I’ve participated in a 5K (like about 12), and I’ve only run on and off since then. I talked Jason into joining me, and we now have a challenge with a deadline to hit.
The first race we’re signing up for is The North Face Endurance Challenge. The event takes place in the Kettle Moraine, and this year they’ve added a 5K to their other much longer distance runs.
Not only will this be my first 5K in years, it will be my first foray into trail running, which I know from Kristin is a whole different challenge. However, it makes a nice combination of my outdoors and healthy living interests.

Awesome, Laura. Good luck to you and Jason. I know you’ll do great!
Thanks Kristin!
