It is starting to sink in that Jason and I will be backpacking through the High Sierra Camps of Yosemite! I am very glad that we have about 8 months to prepare – I know I’m going to need it, especially since I’m already mildly freaking out
. It’s never too early to start getting ready for this adventure.
Prepared to tackle last summer’s challenge: an “adventure hike” up to Vernal and Nevada Falls.

DNC Parks & Resorts at Yosemite, the concessionaire running the lodging in Yosemite, provides a page of tips for getting ready for the High Sierra Camps. You better believe I’ll be following these tips to the letter.
In addition, I want to work with the Beginner Backpacker guide on The Lightweight Backpacker.
Combining everything, here is what the next 8 months hold in store for me:
- Conditioning: Getting in shape and staying in shape.
- Learning: Acquiring backpacking knowledge through reading and possibly through connections to clubs or outdoors organizations.
- Shopping: Understanding what I need for this trip and buying it!
- Practicing: Learning best “on the trail” practices as well as breaking in my gear.
Not gonna lie, this is going to be a real challenge for me. But it’s a challenge that I really want to take on. I’m excited to share my journey with you, and I hope you find it educational, inspiring, and, most of all, entertaining
.
Question – Especially for those of you who know me well: How crazy am I??

Sometimes my favorite part of a big trip is the antcipation. But I also like those trips that are planned at the last minute…the ones were you worry you might have forgot something.
I’m sure you will do fine…if you can hike and sleep outside…then your halfway there.
