Product Review: Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm

I have a confession: I am obsessed with beauty products.

Earlier this fall, I spent an afternoon cleaning out my closet. The sheer amount of lotions, half-used bottle of perfume, and random make-up samples was out of control. I was proud of myself that day – I actually tossed the vast majority of my lingering product stash.

I don’t know what it is, but buying a new tube of lip gloss, a new bottle of nail polish, or a new type of hand lotion just feels good. While I have curbed my buying habits substantially over the years, I still like to try new products. Maybe it’s just that I like to look pretty  🙂

One of my latest finds is Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm. I hadn’t found a lip gloss or balm that I loved in quite some time. I was partially sucked in by the packaging. Then I really looked at the color options, and I saw a lot of them that I liked. My only concerns: Would the color really look that good when applied? Would the color last? How balm-like would it be?

My concerns were smashed on the first use. It’s not a super heavy balm, and it’s very smooth when applied. There’s no sacrifice of moisture for color. Actually, this balm moisturizes better than most products I’ve tried recently. The addition of Shea Butter might be to thank.

As for the color, it’s beautiful. It is pretty darn true to what you see on the packaging. The color lasts a decent amount of time – not forever, but long enough. The first tube I bought was in Pink Blossom. It’s a pretty pink, but it turned out to be a little darker on my lips than the packaging had me believe.

I wound up buying a tube in Honeysuckle (above), which I assumed would be lighter in color, and I am obsessed! It actually reminds me of my very favorite lip tint ever, possibly the first lip color I ever wore. It was from Cover Girl and I was so sad when it was discontinued. But I digress…

After Balm

Just a hint of color and a little shimmer, at least with the Honeysuckle. (I totally feel like these are infomercial before/after pictures, where the after looks better because the person is actually smiling 😉  )

Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm also comes in Tiger Lilly, Hibiscus, Red Dahlia, and Rose. It retails for $7.00 and can be found in most drugstores. I picked mine up at Walgreens.

Burt’s Bees is one of the companies whose products I’ve been gravitating towards as I’ve been “greening” my beauty routine. I appreciate their commitment to using natural ingredients (the Tinted Lip Balm is 100% natural) and the eco-friendly packaging. I feel good using their products, and it’s made all the better when they deliver in the ways I want them to.

Putting My Best Face Forward

I try to take very good care of my skin. I used to get regular facials, but I’m not living as grand as a professional as I did as a grad student 😕 . However, last week I did have a facial at a spa I had never visited before. While it was nice at the time, my face was all irritated only two days later. Boo!

A few months ago, I wrote about greening my beauty routine. I switched out the cleanser that I had been using for years and replaced it with a greener option from Juice Beauty. I wanted to give the switch some time before I wrote much more about it.

At first, I did experience some mild skin irritation along my jawline. After a couple of weeks, however, it cleared up. Now, I’m loving the cleanser.

Juice Beauty Cleansing Gel

When I originally wrote about trying a new cleanser, the people at Juice Beauty reached out to me with an opportunity to try another of their products: the Green Apple Peel. They sent me a sample size of the peel (for sensitive skin) and I have been using it once a week for about a month and a half now. I love it, too!

The Green Apple Peel is a super lightweight gel mask. I started using it during the last week of the irritation I was experiencing after the cleanser switch. I don’t know if the mask was responsible, but the irritation did seem to subside quickly after using the peel for the first time.

What I really like about the Green Apple Peel is that it just leaves my skin feeling clean and fresh. There’s no artificial tightness or tingling that I’ve experienced with other masks or scrubs. I just feel like I’m treating my skin to healthy goodness.

With winter now upon us, I’m contemplating picking up their Exfoliating Cleanser to use once or twice a week. I might even splurge on a tube of tinted Lip Moisturizer, even though I need more lip balm/gloss like I need a hole in the head 🙂 .

Greening My Life: Being Good to My Skin

As I have connected more with the outdoors, I have become more conscious of being kind to the earth. As a result, I’m trying to go “green” with more of my everyday routines and needs.

I haven’t quite finished my first “going green” task: switching the light bulbs in our house to CFLs. We’ve made steady progress, but we still have a few rooms to tackle.

However, the opportunity presented itself for me to move on to another task: switching to a more ecofriendly beauty routine. I was quickly running out of my face cleanser, so this was the perfect time to make a change.

This change was a difficult one. I have been using Bio-Elements products for about 7 years, and my skin has been virtually perfect since I started using their products.

Despite their name, they don’t rank well in terms of cosmetic safety. There are ingredients in the cleanser that are linked to allergies, organ system toxicity, irritation of the eyes, skin, and lungs, and other use restrictions. The cleanser is by no means the worst product on the planet, but I could do better.

After doing a little homework by consulting Sephora, Green Chic, and the Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database, I decided to give Juice Beauty a try. Juice Beauty ranks better in terms of cosmetic safety, provides comparable products to the Bio-Elements routine I already follow, and has received solid reviews from reputable sources.

I only started using the Cleansing Gel earlier this week, but I like it so far. I know I will soon be in need of moisturizer, so I’ll be looking at options in that area.
